Keyboard shortcuts and modes

Drawing modes, snap, and the keys that need the map focused.

Reviewed

What this is for

What the pointer is about to do, and the keys that only fire while the canvas has focus. Click the map once and they are live. They do not interfere with typing in a panel. Undo and redo are the exception: they work from anywhere on the page except inside a text box. The keys are listed on the Keyboard rail so they can be found.

A named mode sits over the map, with the instruction beside it and Done Esc as the way out. Pan is the resting state and is not announced.

Steps

  1. Open Keyboard on the rail; the list opens expanded:
    • A draw keepout · E edit selected keepout · R rotate modules portrait / landscape
    • Del delete selection · Esc cancel drawing
    • Shift snap to a corner, or hold the edge square if none is near
    • Drag move the selected obstruction · Alt+drag copy an obstruction where you drop it
    • Right-click remove that corner (never below three)
    • Shift+drag open the 3D view, aimed by the drag · Shift+Space show / hide modules
    • Ctrl+C / V copy / paste a field segment
    • Ctrl+R turn the segment 15°; Ctrl+Shift+R turns it back
    • Ctrl+Z / Y undo / redo the last change to this design
    • S bulk select on / off - it works, though the rail's list leaves it out
  2. While drawing, an edge locks square to the one before it whenever the cursor comes near one, and the rubber band goes solid to say so. Aim further off and it draws freely again. Shift holds the square whatever the cursor does. From the second corner a dotted line previews the edge that would close the shape; it brightens when it holds to a 45° step against the first edge.
  3. In any numeric field beside the map, up and down arrows step the value by its own increment. Nothing is saved until Update field segment. Those arrows belong to the inspector, not the canvas: mixing the two lists is how a reader concludes the shortcuts are broken.
  4. Undo rewinds the last saved change. The undo and redo arrows on the top bar do the same and name the step. Wiring, a placed inverter and a site-plan file sit outside it; the marker is stepped over and says so.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Click the map after using a panel, or the keys do nothing and look broken.
  • Right-click will not take a polygon below three corners.
  • A corner or edge drag commits like every other gesture. There is no separate canvas undo.
